A Simple Rose

Sorry for the delay, it's almost Thursday here so let's cut to the chase! Here's another Walk-through Weds post featuring my second Moleskine entry.

Step 1

 Step 1

Start with a basic sketch and paint the petals with a light pink or red. Use lots of water to dilute the pigment. Your sketch should be light and use either 6H or lighter so you won't ruin the paper

Step 2

Step 2

Continue painting the rest of the petals but add light purple shadows or blue to bring out the contrast. Also darken your pinks for shadows as well. Glaze over after the initial wash has dried so you won't disturb the layers underneath.

Step 3

Step 3

This photo better shows the light purple shadows. I used a white gel pen liner to emphasize the highlights and bring out the contrast. Glaze more pink paint in areas that need to be darkened or more saturated.

Step 4

Step 5

Step 4

Closeup photo above so you can see the white gel pen used here. Continue glazing more pink paint in the center and around shadows. Mix Sennelier blue-violet around edges.

Step 5-6

Step 5-6

Paint the stems and leaves starting with a light yellow under-painting and then darker greens layered on top

Soften the edges and add more shadows to the outer petals. Almost there! Use a tissue to remove too much paint from highlights.

Finished!

Done! Collect all the little details and let dry.
